Language Arts Program Overview

In Language Arts, students are immersed in a comprehensive, knowledge-based program that integrates skill development within a content-driven curriculum. Guided by the Georgia Standards of Excellence, this approach ensures that literacy skills are taught meaningfully through grade-level materials, including core and supplementary texts, informational videos, and visual arts.

Instructional Framework

Our program is built on explicit instruction that is structured, sequential, cumulative, but flexible. The program systematically builds upon previous knowledge to ensure students develop a strong foundation before progressing to more complex skills. Instruction is designed to be emotionally sound and multisensory, engaging students through multiple pathways to support diverse learning needs. Furthermore, Speech Language Pathologists push into Language Arts classrooms to support both expressive and receptive language skills across all areas of literacy instruction.

Core Components

Speaking and Listening: Students actively participate in discussions and collaborative learning experiences that strengthen oral language skills and support literacy development. Visual aids enhance comprehension and support students in expressing their ideas clearly and confidently.

Language Skills: Vocabulary development focuses on building breadth and depth of knowledge through systematic practice with tier II vocabulary. Terms are reinforced through visuals and multiple representations, ensuring students develop rich understanding of word meanings. Style and conventions are taught through integrated study modules, with explicit attention to revising and editing strategies that students practice through daily reinforcement activities.

Reading: Students develop comprehension skills through analysis of exemplar texts and engagement with diverse, grade-appropriate materials that build background knowledge across content areas. Through systematic semantic mapping activities, students explore word relationships, build vocabulary networks, and deepen conceptual understanding by connecting new terms to prior knowledge and related concepts. Critical thinking skills are fostered as students analyze text structures, evaluate author's purpose, make inferences, synthesize information across multiple sources, and engage in evidence-based discussions that require them to support their interpretations with textual evidence. This integrated approach ensures students not only comprehend texts but also develop the analytical and vocabulary skills necessary for academic success across all subject areas.

Writing: Our systematic approach begins at the sentence level to build syntactic awareness, progressing to explicit instruction in paragraph structure and elements. Students engage in daily, spiraled review and reinforcement of sentence and paragraph-level writing skills embedded within grade-level content. In upper grades, students begin to weave in structural elements of multi-paragraph/essay level writing. Instruction includes analysis of exemplar texts, shared writing experiences, and independent writing practice to develop communication of ideas and craft.

This integrated approach ensures that all literacy components work together to support student growth in both foundational skills and content knowledge, with specialized speech and language support embedded throughout all areas of instruction.
