Our Founder
Gail has always been an advocate of language-based learning since she herself is dyslexic and her daughter and grandson have also been identified. “We teach a strong language- based curriculum at The Swift School with our core being the Orton Gillingham approach. This format is one of the oldest and most successful approaches created for the LD child.” Dr. Samuel Orton, a neuropsychiatrist and pathologist created the multi-sensory approach as he believed that all of the sensory pathways – visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile needed to be involved in learning. He worked with educator and psychologist Bessie Gillingham to create an academic curriculum. Orton-Gillingham teaches children to encode (spell) and decode (read) by a systematic, structured, step-by-step approach. Additionally, The Swift School provides a complete curriculum including a writing program, math, science, social studies, the arts, and physical education, honoring the whole child. “We know that children are gifted in various areas and all their strengths are provided for at our school. Our aim is to improve self-esteem while building academic skills.” To have a learning difference is to look at life differently. There is no cure, but dyslexic children are bright and can learn strategies to adapt to the academic world while sharing their own strengths. “There is light at the end of the tunnel for all of our children. I have taught for over 37 years, 28 of those with children that learn differently. This is my niche in life and I love it!” |
